Fonta Flora Loop is a 4.2 mile, easy to moderate difficult hiking trail located in the Fonta Flora Recreational County Park, NW of Morganton, NC. The trail begins in the parking lot near the bathrooms.
This trail is rated easy to moderate due to some elevation changes, but none significant. The trail is clay packed and covered with pine needles. There are no rocks and very few roots on the trail. The first 1/4th of the trail leads you through the forest, the middle half follows Lake James with some stunning views of the lake, then the last 1/4th leads you back through the forest to the trail head. Benches are strategically set along the route so hikers can take in the views. Halfway on the trial, you can hike down to a small beach for a rest or to put your feet in the cold water. This hike should take approximately 2 1/2 hrs to complete.
After the hike, we plan to eat a late lunch or snack in Morganton- restaurant to be determined.
All registrants interested in carpooling will meet at the Academy Parking Lot at exit 35 to depart by 8 am. If you desire to drive and meet us at the trail head instead, please let Joleen or Laura know in advance.
